How to Get Back to Full Fitness for the New Football Season

After a long summer break, the first game back can feel like a big reality check. The legs feel heavier, first touch isn’t as sharp, and the pace of the match seems much quicker than you remember. The good news? That is completely normal.

Whether you have taken a few weeks off or stepped away from football for longer, the key to getting back to match fitness is having a structured plan to get back to full fitness.

Rebuild your fitness gradually

One of the biggest mistakes players make is jumping straight back into full-intensity training. Doing too much too soon can increase your risk of injury and leave you struggling with recovery between sessions, dropping motivation to continue.

Start by rebuilding your base fitness levels with steady runs and interval training. Short bursts of higher-intensity work, such as shuttle runs, are especially useful because they mimic the stop-start nature of football.

Alongside cardio workouts, include lower-body and core exercises such as squats, lunges, planks and side planks. Stronger legs and a stable core help you accelerate, change direction and cope with the physical demands of a match.

Additionally, to regain sharpness, add agility work such as ladder drills, cone drills and quick change-of-direction exercises.

Getting your touch back

Match fitness is not just about running. You also need to rebuild your on the ball the sharpness.

Spend time working on your passing, first touch and ball control. Small-sided games and training matches are ideal because they combine fitness with real game practice.

Repetition is also important for shooting and finishing. The more practice the quicker you’ll get back into the rhythm of knowing exactly where the goal is.

Recover properly

Consistent training is only possible if you recover well.

Priorities’ sleep, hydration and nutrition so your body can cope with the increased workload. Before every session, complete a proper warm-up that includes mobility, activation and dynamic movements. After training or matches, cool down and stretch to help reduce stiffness and support recovery.

A useful guideline is the 10% rule: increase your training load gradually by 10% weekly, rather than making a huge jump from one week to the next. Doing these huge jumps in intensity can place significantly more stress on the body and can increase injury risk.

New Season Ready?

Getting back to match fitness takes time, but it does not need to be complicated. Build your fitness gradually, get regular games/training in the bank, recover properly and play consistently.

The players who feel best when the season starts are usually not the ones who rushed back into training, they are the ones who trained steadily with a structured plan, stayed healthy and kept playing football.
