5-a-Side
The 7 Types of Player You’ll Find in Every 5-a-Side Team
Every 5-a-side team is the same five players wearing different faces. Whether you play in a Monday night league or a casual kickabout, you will recognise all seven of these. The only question is which one you are.
5-a-side football is a great leveller. You do not need to be fit, fast, or any good to have a brilliant game, and the small pitch means personality matters as much as ability. Over enough Tuesday nights, the same characters turn up on every team sheet. Here they are.
1The Cage Baller
Grew up playing 5-a-side on a concrete court and it shows. Close control, quick feet, and a drop of the shoulder that has beaten the same defender four weeks running. Will attempt a rabona in a 3–3 game. Contributes roughly one moment of genius and one baffling giveaway per match. Nets it far more often than the sensible players want to admit.
Best used: on the ball, in tight spacesLeast useful: tracking back
2The Ex-Sunday League Centre-Half
Played eleven-a-side until their knees gave up and has brought the full-pitch mentality onto a court the size of a tennis court. Stands at the back, points a lot, and shouts “squeeze” at people who have nowhere to squeeze to. Every clearance is launched off the back wall with real venom. Genuinely useful when the other team has a Cage Baller.
Best used: as the last lineLeast useful: anywhere near the opposition goal
3The Goalkeeper Who Never Volunteered
Drew the short straw in week one and has been in goal ever since. Not a goalkeeper. Makes three world-class saves and then throws one into their own net. Spends the game asking to be subbed outfield “for ten minutes”. When they finally get their ten minutes they score, wheel away like it means everything, and then go back in goal.
Best used: reluctantlyLeast useful: with the ball at their feet under pressure
4The Engine
Not the most skilful player on the pitch and does not need to be. They cover every blade of the AstroTurf, presses when everyone else has given up, and is somehow first to every loose ball. Scores scrappy goals from two yards because they are the only one who bothered to run into the box. Wakes up on Wednesday unable to walk. Does it all again the following week.
Best used: everywhere, constantlyLeast useful: n/a – just look after them
5The Fantasy Footballer
Only interested in scoring. Will not track a runner, will not pass to a better-placed teammate, will not acknowledge that defending exists. Stands on the halfway line waiting for the game to come to them. Infuriating for 55 minutes, then scores a hat-trick and acts like they carried the team. Sometimes they did.
Best used: as an out-ball when you are under pressureLeast useful: when your team is defending a lead
6The Enforcer
Treats a friendly 5-a-side game like a cup final. Slide tackles on artificial grass. Blocks shots with their face. Has a running feud with someone on the other team that nobody else understands. You are quietly glad they are on your side, and you spend half the game apologising for them.
Best used: against a team that is bullying youLeast useful: in front of a referee
7The Organiser (a.k.a. the one who books the pitch)
The reason the team exists. They set up the WhatsApp group, chases everyone for confirmations by Thursday, books the pitch, collects the money, and sorts a sub when someone drops out at 6pm. Never gets a thank you. If they ever stop, the team quietly folds within a month. Usually plays in goal or at the back because nobody else will.
Best used: off the pitch, doing the adminLeast useful: never tell her the team could manage without her
Which One Are You?
| If you… | You are the… |
|---|---|
| Try skills you have no business trying | Cage Baller |
| Organise the defensive line nobody asked for | Ex-Sunday League Centre-Half |
| Are in goal against your will | Reluctant Goalkeeper |
| Run until you are sick, score from two yards | Engine |
| Only come alive in the opposition box | Fantasy Footballer |
| Tackle like the league title is on the line | Enforcer |
| Booked the pitch and chased the payments | Organiser |
Most players are a bit of two of these. The best teams have one of each.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many players are in a 5-a-side team?
Five on the pitch at once, including the goalkeeper. Most teams carry a squad of seven or eight so they can make substitutions and cover for players who cannot make it.
What positions do you play in 5-a-side?
There are no fixed positions, but most teams settle into a goalkeeper, one or two defenders, a worker in midfield, and a striker who stays high. Everyone is expected to attack and defend.
What is the best formation for 5-a-side?
A 1-2-1 (diamond) is the most balanced: one defender, two wide midfielders, one striker. A 2-2 is more solid defensively, while a 1-1-2 commits more players forward if you need a goal.
Do you need a full team to play 5-a-side?
Not always. Many Powerleague venues run pay-and-play sessions where individuals and small groups are put into teams on the night, so you can play even without a full squad.
